WE HAVE LIFT-OFF!

Exactly 29 weeks (6 months and 20 days) Della lifted her belly off the ground!

For weeks now Della has been very, repeat VERY,  frustrated with her inability to travel on her own. To compensate she has developed a sad sort of military crawl/roll/push/pull which she uses to maneuver herself from one attraction to the next. She is really very good at it with exception of the occasions when her head hits the ground harder than anticipated and she starts screaming.
About two weeks ago she realized that the easiest way to change her view was to slither/slide/roll over to mommy’s lap and ask to be stood up … as standing is her favorite vantage point.  She learned that if she asked to be picked up the chance of actually being picked up increased. And so she heads in my direction and places her cute little hand on my leg and looks up with an undeniable question on her chubby little face, please mommy can I stand up.  Of course, if you don’t pick her up within her emotionally constrained baby window of time, that polite pretty face turns into a mess of screaming baby, but you get the gist.

So yesterday, while eating lunch with Nana and watching Della roll around on the floor, all of a sudden she was on all fours! (We’ll ignore the fact that she had performed this feat earlier in the day for her Nana and pretend I was there for this “first”.)  I don’t know what little neuron fired in her brain but something clicked into place and then Della was elevated. Della was nice enough to repeat the lift-off several times that afternoon as her Daddy and I watched.

No crawling yet, or even really any rocking, but she can get her fat baby belly off the ground which is more of a successful pushup than I can do right now. I imagine her first true mobility is due to appear in the next week or so … I’d better hurry up and figure out how to baby proof the house.
